drape folder components

Drape folder – to date (17 May)

1. (weeks 1&2) Skirt drape, paper pattern and toile of made pattern.

2. (week 2) Skirt experiment exercise based on shape – photos only and include your

partners name + some sketches of design ideas how this drape could inform a skirt

design/s.

3. (week 3) Basic bodice paper patterns & made bodice (the actual drape piece you used

for the bustier). Plus homework task – 2 front bodice drapes & paper pattern (no ease

required).

4. (week 4) The bustier drape, paper patterns. *The made garment for this component

will be assessed in construction.

5. (week 5) Photos from the in class exercise – discuss technique utilised to drape form,

what works, what doesn’t work and how you might use certain elements. Homework

task based on WGSN Macro Trend – photos of drape and discuss opens, features and

techniques. No paper pattern required, but drape needs to start to be refined more to

resemble a bodice

6. (week 7) In class exercise (Viv Westwood): drape and paper patterns with

ALL markings. See handout in week 7. You need to include your original

drape, but no need to remake.

7. Designer research will also be in the Drape folder, as will your embroidery samples

you do with Mary starting in week 7. From this week on, everything will be in the

drape folder, which is due for assessment at the end of the semester, BUT, I would

like to check these in week 9.

8. Mary’s bead work – in class exercises and homework

13. any experiments and process work you do up until the folder is due in in week 13

(2nd of June – 9:15am). This should be supported by documentation discuss ideas,

design direction and basically analysing the design in relation to your concept.

Things that you will need to constantly assess include – silhouette, proportion,

balance, continuity, embellishments, fastenings, details, and also importantly, know

when there is too much in a design, or not enough!

Any additional work after this date can be submitted with bodice.

Task highlighted in red are the tasks/patterns that I will be looking at very closely. All

other work will be checked.

1. All weekly technical tasks & homework tasks completed and included (Week 1 – 10)

Research document so far...

I'm working on the 'multi-page' PDF research document. It is an illustrator document, with 13 portrait A3 artboards, each containing a different topic about poster composition.

More great 1940s style hair.

Digital Assessment 2- poster reflection.

The comments on my last assessment were helpful in directing the images for this task. It was suggested more depth be added, in the background and in the hair. This is why I used slightly transparent background location images, hand drew the hair in 'Full Bloom,' and used layers of indigo to bring depth to the poses.
This assignment made me more familiar with using Illustrator, and I enjoyed the ability to use keyboard shortcuts, including: I for eyedropper, V for selection tool, A for white selection tool, L for ellipse, P for pen tool, + and - to add and subtract anchor points.
It was good to practise creating symbols, particularly for the jewellery in 'For the Better,' and the studs in 'Just for Fun.'
Scanning the hair in for 'Full bloom' was a helpful option. when i tried to do pen tooled sections of hair in different shades of light, then go over them with brush tool to make it look like hair, it just looked strange.
It was good to practise using text within a document. Finding good fonts, deciding on text hierarchy and colour, were important. The research document was informative in terms of seeing what is on the market, and what works and does not.
After completing this assignment, when i see beautiful fashion images online, i want to put them into Illustrator and draw them!!

Final poster- Just for Fun

This image was also found on picsandmodels.blogspot.com. i thought the pose, and the dress up Disney style had had a real 'just for fun' spin. i love the deep tan colour of the outfit, and the studs on the hat give great texture, and a subtle sense of luxury. This image, too, was posterised in Photoshop, before importing into illustrator. Above left is the posterised image. The studs were made as a symbol, using the eyedropper tool from the original image, to give a sense of the golden colour, and their depth.
The background image is of a pile of bricks, taken in the Mekong Delta in southern Vietnam. It was chosen for its colour harmony with the outfit, and its introduction of another layer of texture.
The font used was JulesLove from DaFont. It is a playful, fun font, which enhances this communication in the image. It could be viewed as unprofessional and child-like, but combination with the fashion image helps to create a more sophisticated balance.

Final poster- For the Better

The reference picture was found at picsandmodels.blogspot.com - a fabulous resource for fashion images online!!! I love the picture for its communication of a peaceful 'for the better' attitude. It conjures notions of holidays, relaxation and peace. The use of a gentle breeze, warm light, and a transparent shirt, really enhance this ethereal whimsicality.
This image was also posterised in photoshop, so that the contours could be effectively rendered according to their darkness. The shirt was made transparent, but the image lacked texture, so earring, and necklace symbols were made into pattern brushes, and a bangle was added. This was also to make a clearer 'fashion' message in the image. The background image was taken of a sunset in Kep, in southern Cambodia. I like the way the colours of the image complement the background, and the way her feet are reflected in the water. The background was positioned so that the lines of cloud could work as an effective vector in the composition.
The font is Gastada from DaFont. It was chosen for its soft, scratchy, natural, slightly decaying vibe, which could conjure visions of a decaying wooden beach bar where people dance to reggae music and drink mojitos while watching the sunset, wearing swimsuits, kaftans and jewellery.

Final poster- Full bloom

This was the reference image. I chose it for the dynamic pose which created interesting vectors for the eye. I enjoy the nude, tan and white colour palette for its simplicity and sophistication. The chic 1940s hair is perfect, and the accent flower makes the image great for the theme.

After finding this image on Fashion Gone Rogue's tumblr, I posterised it in Photoshop. This allowed me to follow the posterised contours in illustrator, and render the final image with indigo of different opacities. This was intended to create a real sense of depth.
The final image uses a landscape background at 50% opacity, to create depth. I took the photo in Siem Reap province in northern Cambodia, and chose it as agricultural land seemed appropriate with a foreground theme of flora. The image uses subtle tones, and was chosen as it does not detract from the main image.
The font is VTKS flowers in our soul, downloaded from DaFont. I like how it looks like a regular font from far away, but up close there is great floral intricacy within each letter.
