Mary's tips for embroidery

Hi 2nd Years,
I promised to put online all that I have previously verbalised to you on what I expect to see when assessing your work – so reiterating:
1. Your design process for the embellishment of the draped bodice is to be recorded in your journal and needs to include:
• Annotated inspirational images relating to the Hand & Lock theme that you have chosen
• Thumbnail sketches of possible designs (very rarely is the first thumbnail sketch totally satisfying) for the embroidery on the draped bodice (annotated to explain how these relate to the H & L theme and to the construction and drape of the bodice)
• Samples of materials (they will set the colour palette) and techniques that you are considering employing for the embellishment of the draped bodice.
2. All class samples and homework from weeks 7–12 must be in the journal – techniques accurately executed, labelled and professionally displayed. The homework samples need to demonstrate that you had acquired a grasp of the technique in class and could now move on to exploring how it could be used creatively.
3. The final design and all the samples of embellishment done as part of the design process, as well as the actual embellishment on the draped bodice need to show the following:
• Appropriateness to the Hand & Lock theme and above all to the construction and drape of the bodice
• Creativity and innovation in the use of materials and techniques
• Professional execution of techniques in samples and on the bodice (for example, beads and sequins need to be firmly attached)
I wish you all the best and I look forward to seeing the end result of all your labours! Already, as a cohort, you have demonstrated great creativity and enthusiasm.
Mary
